St Martins College farewell party

St Martins College farewell party
Was back at the Charing Cross Road campus of Central St Martins College Friday night for the 1st time in 12 years for the farewell party of a building which has seen some of fashions most influential people tread its worn corridors.
Bumped into a few old friends from college days & saw a smattering of well known industry faces amongst the usual throng of 'trying too hard to look like a St Martins Student loveys'. I still haven't worked out why people (mainly the men) feel the need to dress in the most ridiculous outfits to somehow prove that they go to St Martins. You just know that these people are only interested in being seen rather than refining their craft. The people with the real talent let that do the talking.
When I was a student at St Martins in the mid-nineties I was fortunate enough to do work experience at Alexander McQueen & not once did I see him in anything other than jeans & a T-shirt or shirt.... He was too busy making sure his collections were the best they could be to worry about styling himself in high-heels, cut-off denim shorts & a turban. The same goes for my former classmate Ricardo Tisci who would come to college in jeans & a T-shirt.
Anyway back to the party. A lot of the college was out of bounds, however the main womenswear & menswear fashion floors were open, with free Absolute Vodka & Haribo in abundance.
The recently reformed Pulp (Jarvis had the same idea as us & dined at Dean Street Town House before heading around the corner to the party- I'd recommend the mince & potatoes) played a small selection of their greatest hits from an intimate stage at the end of the old womenswear studio. The biggest cheers were reserved for Common People with the line that immortalized the college 'She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge, she studied sculpture at St Martins College....'
Have included some photos from the party (excuse the quality) & a video of Jarvis describing his time Studying there.
I think it's a shame the college has moved from this old building, part of the magic of studying there was thinking of all the talented people that had walked the same corridors & pass through the same doorways on their way to greatness. With the move to a shiny new building in Kings Cross that connection will now be lost forever.
However I'm sure it won't effect the try-hards who will be too busy deciding on the next ridiculous outfit to make sure everyone knows they study fashion at St Martins College.....
